Family Session Tip Sheet

Session Flow

We will spend the first half of the session on group shots. I like to shoot a mix of the family looking at the camera and some interaction shots with the group close together. I typically shoot the entire group, then the kids with separate parents, followed by the kids together and separate, as well as any other combinations that you included in the questionnaire.

After group shots, I like to spend the latter half of the session getting more play-based photos. I will come with ideas, but feel free to incorporate your family’s favorite games or songs. These shots are normally super fun and produce natural smiles!

Tips for Dressing: DOs

Choose complementary colors! I like to look up complementary colors by image searching for complementary colors online.

If you have something you love to wear (or something you’d love your child to wear), base others’ outfits off of that.

Accessories and layers can make for some really great shots (and can be added or removed for variety). Don’t shy away from jewelry, scarves, vests, sweaters, ties, and hats.

Add some prints! Moms look beautiful in floral or other patterned, flowy dresses. Prints can be especially great on kids, like polka dot tights on girls, or a striped shirt on boys.

Tips for Dressing: DON’Ts

Don’t wear clothing with graphics.

Don’t wear athletic shoes. Young childrens’ shoes are especially important since they show prominently when being held.

Don’t wear things on your wrist that you don’t want in the photos. Hair scrunchie? Nope. Rolex? Sure!

Women: If you don’t want roots showing, schedule your hair appointment close to the shoot date. Also, please don’t come with chipped nail polish. This is extremely difficult to touch up and never looks perfect.

Tips for Young Children

Bring something small and easy for them to snack on (goldfish, m&ms). Avoid candies that stain the mouth/tongue.

Dress them in something somewhat comfortable.

If I need assistance getting them to smile at the camera, stand directly behind me!

General Advice

Come about 10 minutes early to get everyone situated in clothing.

I will make sure to get the combinations of people you want, but if you have other ideas during the shoot, feel free to tell me. I don’t want you to leave and think “I wish we had done...”

Prepare to play! Have fun (Dad too!) and do the things that you know makes your family laugh and loosen up. I will work around you!

Don’t stress! I will work with children no matter what mood they are in and we will get GREAT shots.
